Governor appoints 3 to cannabis commission

GOVERNOR Ralph D.L.G. Torres has appointed his consultant Matthew Deleon Guerrero, Homeland Security External Affairs Officer Nadine Deleon Guerrero and Valentino Taisacan Jr. as members of the Cannabis Commission.

Mathew Deleon Guerrero and Nadine Deleon Guerrero were personally picked by the governor while Taisacan, who currently works for the Office of Personnel Management, was recommended by Northern Islands Mayor Vicente Santos.

The three appeared in a public hearing conducted by the Saipan delegation’s judiciary committee chaired by Rep. Ivan Blanco on Wednesday afternoon in the House chamber.

The three new appointees will be Saipan’s representatives to the commission, which has two other members representing Tinian and Rota.

The Tinian and Rota mayors have yet to appoint their representatives who also need to be confirmed by the islands’ legislative delegations.

Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation Chairman John Paul Sablan said the public hearing on Wednesday went well and there was overwhelming support for the three appointees.

Sablan said a delegation session will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the House chamber to confirm the three nominees.

For its part, the cannabis commission has 180 days to promulgate rules and regulations before the marijuana legalization law can be implemented.
