Garapan fire displaces 56 people

THIRTY-SEVEN families comprising 56 people were displaced by the fire that broke out in the former Pretty Market grocery store in Garapan that spread to their homes last week, according to Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services public information officer Bobbie Taisacan.

She still could not say what caused the fire which started at 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 1. At 3:42 p.m., the blaze reached an adjacent building and several homes at the back of the establishment. No one was injured.

One of the residents in the area said the people who were staying at the former Pretty Market were running their generator “24 hours non-stop.”

“There was no ventilation there,” another resident added

A $2,000 reward is being offered for anyone who may have any information that will lead to the arrest or conviction of person/s involved in the fire. Call 287-9900 for more information.

Taisacan said  firefighters pulled out four barrels of flammable fluid from the former grocery store, adding  that there were a lot of combustible materials in the building which was being used as a storage area.

Firefighters also pulled out a burned generator from the former store, she added.
