THE fire that broke out at 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the former Pretty Market on Middle Road, Garapan spread to 10 houses at the back of the establishment.
Police said 29 individuals were victims of the fire, but no one was reported injured.
One of the residents in the area said the people who were staying at Pretty Market were running their generator “24 hours non-stop.”
“There was no ventilation there,” another resident added.
Firefighters managed to control the blaze at 4:02 p.m., according to Capt. Paul Sasamoto, the incident commander at the scene.
Sasamoto told Variety that the nearby fire hydrant had no water. He said they asked the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to turn the water on but to no avail.
According to fire department public information officer Bobbie Taisacan, they had to utilize a mobile water tank stationed at a typhoon shelter. They also asked assistance from the Commonwealth Ports Authority-Aircraft Rescue Firefighting team.
Taisacan said the cause of fire was not yet known as of press time Thursday.
She told Variety that firefighters pulled out four barrels of flammable fluid from Pretty Market, but she could not say if it was gasoline.
She added that there were a lot of combustible materials stored in the establishment that was being used as a storage area.
The firefighters also pulled out a burned generator from the former store, she said.
