THE U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food Nutrition Services may extend the Disaster Nutrition Assistance or DNAP and Supplemental Assistance programs for another week.
Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Robert Hunter said the FNS decided on Monday evening to reduce to 1,000 the number of applications to be processed for both programs.
On Sunday, the NAP office processed more than 2,000 applications. The following day, about 1,700 applications were received and processed, Hunter said.
“The line was too long and the wait-time was too long. We, NAP and the FNS, decided last night that we needed to change the schedule [and cut the number] to 1,000 per day,” he added.
Hunter said over 130 people are processing the applications, but it was still not enough.
With the reduction in the number of applications to be processed, he said they have also issued a new schedule. Numbers D07401 and up for DNAP, and number S1751 for Supplemental Assistance have no schedule yet.
“We will have to accommodate everybody,” Hunter assured the people. “When I met them, [extension] is what they are looking at,” he said, referring to the FNS.
“It is still not official yet. We still have to receive the approval in writing from the FNS. They are the ones who will make the final decision.”
Hunter added that they are still giving out assignment numbers at the Minachom Atdao pavilion.
The last day for the distribution of numbers is today, Wednesday, when DCCA will accommodate walk-ins only — no more “drive throughs.”
After Wednesday, DCCA will announce where people can get assignment numbers.
