CUC: Saipan 71% energized; new hardware, supplies have arrived

NEW power-pole hardware and supplies arrived over the weekend, according to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.

CUC said it has already energized 71 percent or approximately 9,637 of power consumers on Saipan as of Jan. 4.

On Tinian, CUC said 51 percent of the island has been reconnected to its grid.

CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho said  118 palettes of power-pole hardware arrived on Friday. The following day, he said 250 transformers and 43 reels or 50,000 linear feet of wires arrived on island.

He said CUC also received additional 149 palettes of power-pole hardware and wires, adding that more supplies are expected to arrive this month.

Camacho said the new hardware and supplies are for Tinian and Saipan villages including  San Antonio, Koblerville, Chalan Kanoa and Dandan.

He said the availability of supplies may enable CUC to complete the power recovery program on Saipan by February or early March.

But the hardening and resilient program, which includes the replacement of wooden power poles with concrete ones, will continue, he added.

While waiting for the arrival of more supplies, CUC used recycled materials and refurbished power poles to fast-track the recovery process, Camacho said.

But these will now be replaced to ensure the reliability and durability of the system, he added.
