CUC retrieves 1,702 meters from damaged locations, households, facilities

COMMONWEALTH Utilities Corp. Executive Director Gary Camacho said as of Nov. 7, CUC had retrieved 1,702 power meters from damaged locations, households and facilities with safety concerns on Saipan, including those in Chalan Kiya, Kanat Tabla, Afetnas, San Antonio, lower and upper Dandan.

Camacho said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continues to assist power personnel in collecting and recording damaged transformers which will be shipped for disposal.

He said 145 transformers have been collected on Saipan and CUC will begin collecting damaged transformers on Tinian today, Friday.

Based on CUC’s latest assessment, 1,141 power poles, 676 transformers and 671,220 linear feet of conductors were damaged by Typhoon Yutu.

But Camacho said they have already received 83 pole-mounted transformers and various hardware materials from Guam Power Authority.

There is also an ongoing assessment on damaged poles and transformers from Susupe Mobil Gas Station to the Kiya 4 substation, the Department of Corrections, Texas Road, and Mt. Carmel School; from As Lito to Koblerville; and from St. Jude to Koblerville homestead.

In addition, CUC is data-encoding damage assessment reports and preparing a mitigation plan for post-Super Typhoon Yutu, Camacho said.

On Oct. 28,  members of the Guam Power Authority assessment team, including linemen and an engineer, arrived on Saipan.

Camacho said 33 GPA personnel, including 26 linemen, engineers and other trades staff members, are assisting with the restoration effort.

GPA also brought four bucket trucks, two utility-equipment vans, three 4×4 large utility trucks, and one light cart.

On Nov. 2, Camacho said four CUC Rota linemen arrived to assist with the restoration efforts on Saipan.

In addition, he said CUC has accepted assistance from the Kosrae, Pohnpei and Chuuk utilities,  and is coordinating with the Palau government for additional linemen assistance as well.
