Community Guidance Center to conduct psychological first-aid class on Friday

THE Commonwealth Healthcare Corp., through the Community Guidance Center, will offer a free psychological first-aid class on Friday in the CGC office at the TSL building in Garapan. The exact time will be announced soon.

CHCC public information officer Samantha Birmingham-Babauta said the one-hour class will focus on stress and will be hosted by the U.S. Public Health Services.

“It is also kind of counseling session. They will sit down with the providers, who will conduct training on coping skills,” she said.

Birmingham-Babauta said there is a need to focus on people’s mental health. “In a disaster like this,  some people lost their house, some lost their property. They feel emotionally distressed. Maybe they don’t know what exactly they are feeling, but there is sadness, confusion or anger. Sometimes, we don’t know how to get help to understand and process that feeling. Psychological first aid is to help provide coping skills to people.”

She said CGC also offers crisis counseling, but psychological first-aid is primarily about information. “Some people don’t want to sit down for crisis counseling because they don’t think  they need it. But  this format is more of sit-and-listen class.”

The free class is open to the public. Members of non-profit organizations are also encouraged to join.
